I was asked to make a doll for a commercial a couple of months back by a friend of The Pops. I had no idea what I was doing, so decided to go “off pattern” and I guess I ended up making myself (albeit in knitted and somewhat saucy form). I used 3mm dpns for all with various scraps of cheap acrylic DK.
I started by knitting one leg in the round (top to toe), complete with nobbly knees, then I tried to make another one the same. Next I made the torso from bottom to top by increasing and decreasing in all the relevant places and cast off at the crown of the head. Next, I made the arms and stuffed all limbs and body with bits of old pillow filling. Lastly, I sewed on all limbs and gave her some hair, a face and a simple shift dress. Voila!
Here she is, posing against the wall (the crochet edges to the dress were a later addition):
I was quite pleased with the result but, on taking her out, I soon realised she’s just an old lush really.
The shame of it all.
Here’s the commercial (go to work > motorola). She features for about half a frame…near the end. Oh well.
